Did you hear about 9/11 at church today?

The ten-year anniversary of 9/11 is a week away, and I personally am dreading it. Like a lot of events, big and small, 9/11 has served as a sort of prism by which we have learned all sorts of things, not all of them pleasant.

I have visited a number of churches over the last ten years, and most of them stopped talking about 9/11 on a regular basis about 2003. The couple of exceptions I found were Southern Baptist churches, where references to 9/11 dominated the apparently mandatory current events references in sermons (and occasionally, in prayers) pretty consistently well into 2008 or so. For some reason about the end of 2008 these sort of died off; I have no idea why.

So with the big round number anniversary coming up I would be surprised if we didn’t start hearing 9/11 references again. And I’m wondering if you heard one today.
