local church worker gets probation for sexual contact with minor

Kristina Bibb, 37, now-former financial secretary at local Assemblies-of-God-affiliated Christian Life Fellowship was sentenced to five years of unsupervised probation after pleading no contest to charges stemming from a then-seventeen-year-old student at Christian Life Academy, a school affiliated with the church. Here are the two articles from the local paper, the Santa Fe New Mexican, by Jason Auslander and Steve Terrell:

It isn’t clear to me that Ms Bibb’s position was subject to a background check; the Assemblies of God require background checks for e.g. chaplains, but there’s nothing on the Christian Life Fellowship website to suggest that background checks are required for volunteers who work with or near children.

The Christian Life Fellowship pastor took this case to authorities:

Wheeler confirmed Friday that detectives investigated allegations of criminal sexual penetration of a minor involving Kristina Bibb, who is in her mid-30s. He said the matter was first reported to police Nov. 30 by Pastor Carl Bauman, listed on the Web site as senior pastor at Christian Life Fellowship.

even though the situation is embarrassing and Ms Bibb is well-connected:

Bibb is the wife of lawyer Jim Bibb, the 2006 Republican nominee for attorney general, and the daughter of former Gov. Toney Anaya, a Democrat.

Jim Bibb had a career in law enforcement and received a Bronze Star and the Army Air Medal for his service as a New Mexico Army National Guard helicopter pilot in Afghanistan before he lost the 2006 attorney general’s race to Gary King. In 2007, he was among four lawyers who then-U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., nominated to replace former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias.

I suspect most men in his situation would have been tempted to let the Bibb family leave the church, the minor graduate from the school, and the whole situation blow over.
